You put the pacifiers in dry and close it and the light comes on for five minutes and then goes off. Pacifiers still need to be washed separately. The light comes on and the turns off when it is done "sanitizing". We bought one for the daycare center too. It uses batteries so no need to find power. The UV lamp is actually pretty powerful considering it runs off 2 AA batteries. You can actualy smell a litte ozone when you open up the case right after it shuts off. Ive used it about 50 times so far and no problems. I keep some extra pacifiers in it when I throw it in the diaper bag.
